datalink protocol used in voip

hi all,

i am sowmya and i am working with a team over voip. to start of we need to study the various protocols that are to be implemented. we have good idea of higher layer protocols but the at the base level, how do we start? which protocol do we use, point to point or slip or something else.

please give a solution to this question.
