PBX is private branch exchange.
it basically represents your typical office phone system where you have say 30 phones and 8 lines. The pbx does the intercom, paging, voicemail, and hold/transfer functions. The PBX is the central unit where both your outgiong/incoming lines and your 30 extensions meet.
