This may be a stupid question to those in the know, but I was wondering what most carriers are using for their “backbone”. For example Voip over ATM, IP Vpn or straight IP etc.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

There are some kind of Carriers.
IP Carriers, for INTERNET, they are using IP over SDH or SONET (POS).
Multiservice Carriers: they use A optical backbone with SDH/SONET/DWDM, and over it they use ATM/IP.
