GuestWhat is significance of periodic location update in GSM. I mean what is the advantage?
1)IMSI attach uses an SDCCH and so do
as the IMSI detach.
2)Location update is initiated by an
MS the moment it feels that he has
entered into an different location
area.
Thus if above two options are used in GSM then what is the need of periodic
location update. I think this should be disabled to save the SDCCH resources and so as the work load of MSC/VLR upto some extent. Is there anything else for PERIODIC LOCATION UPDATE.

GuestHi, MKT!
PERIODIC LOCATION UPDATE enables the location of stationary MSs to be confirmed at a rate determined by the operator;
If PERIODIC LOCATION UPDATE disabled —> this results in subscriber unavailability for MTC and MT_SM (in some cases – when subscriber within one location
area and don’t attempts any activity, e.g. MOC,SCI, etc) due to Implisit Detach Procedure in MSC23rd December 2007 at 04:34 #50123NK
GuestHi! MKT,
Periodic Location update is done in order to avoid unnecessary paging for MSs those are turned off.
It is not always possible that MS inform to N/W during detach as in the case of SDCCH congestion as well as when link is poor.

GuestIf link is poor…or if congestion is there on SDCCH…due to which MS was not able to complete IMSI detach….then how can it will be able to complete the LA. Assuming that MS is in the same cell/LA….I think due to its less significance
the GSM specifications has left it on the operator as an optional feature.
I don’t know whether MSC/VLR can only change the time of periodic LA or the
can even enable or disable it.24th December 2007 at 07:24 #50125pix
Guestif link is poor, then the MS cannot do the periodic LU, then the MSC will perform an implicit IMSI detach. This IMSI is no more in the list of active users.
The delay between 2 periodic LU should be less than the MSC’s timer for implicit detach.
This delay can be modified in the OMCR (T3212, insn’it ?)If a cell is not in a lac border, the amount of location update it handles is mostly due to periodic update. You can check with the QOS INDICATORS and see than the amount of SDCCH traffic it generates is rather small.

GuestHi! MKT,
If the MS reamins stationary in poor coverage areas, he will not be able to perform LU. If it is due to congestion, MS will try in some later time and able to perform LU. Without complete LU , MS will not receive an incoming call and incoming message.
Thank you.

GuestIts a paging issue..You can check with TEMS..When you have already perfomed a perodic LU the VLR will update the location and will recieve the Incoming call…MTSMS..
