I know of one Vendor who use a microwave “bitpipe”. This means that the radio-link is unaware of what data it is transporting.
With some smart handling this can guarantee to transport TDM as well as packet data at a configured rate and with known delays etc.
The logic in the hybrid nodes then handles the Ethernet or TDM traffic coming in to the node and delivers it to the “bitpipe” with some overhead added for reassembly purposes etc.
The WAN interfaces and associated logic in these nodes is really state of the art, since they need to handle congestion situations when LAN usually is running at higher speed than the RL capacity can cope with. TDM traffic will always be guaranteed the BW configured and it never becomes a bottleneck.
