BIOS (Basic Input/Ouput System) is a firmware for a PC. It is stored (hard coded) in the EEPROM chip on the mainboard, it will be loaded first when the PC is turned on to perform some “basic input/output” tasks, and then it will load the operating system (e.g. Windows, Linux etc) from the disk.
