Updating routing scheme improves the network

Hi community:

I would like to know if updating the routing paths for some traffic demand will increase the performance of the network. If that is true, how frequently I should change the routing paths. There are any publication that can support this statement. Of course, intuitively if I change the routing path I will find the best option to handle the traffic but I would like to have more statistic data of this.
