I’m trying to test a Cisco 7940 on my network using direct IP SIP but I can’t seem to get the phone give me a dial-tone. The Status reports no errors, and the phone icons on the front of the phone have an ‘x’ next to them. I’m running POS3-06-0-00. I don’t have a CallManager (yet) and I am not running a proxy.

Can this phone be configured for direct ip connections?

    Thanks.

    No.
In any case (H323/SIP/Skinny) the IP phone has to be registered to “something” (H323 gatekeeper, SIP Proxy, Call Manager… call it whatever you want).
It does not support direct calls.
