Pocketc IP Softphone

Does anyone know how the IP softphone works on a Pocket PC. What I don’t understand and can’t find anywhere on the net is, when you hit call what process does this begin, or what happens next? Does it open a port, or does it gp straight over a VPN to a server and query that? I just wan to understand how the IP softphone part works, I understand the rest of the process.
