    Hi all

I was wondering if anyone would be able to advise me as to the most cost efficient (as it’s for a not-for-profit organisation) simple voip set up.

    The senario is as follows:

Location one has a POTS line with ADSL. This particular location will be mostly unmanned however it is the entry point for voice and fax calls (fax not that important, as this could be dealt with in a different way if required).

Location two is me with a POTS line and ADSL, manned most of the time (well that’s the theory anyway !!).

Ideally I would like to be able to let callers to location one have the option of “pressing one” to leave a message or “pressing two” to be transferred to location two. Also for both locations to have voip connectivity to each other. Another aspect would be to allow location two to be able to use the voip to location one and the call go out to the POTS at that point. A sort of teleworker set up. Both locations will also have networked connections to create a LAN (I already have the necessary software for this part).

Finally the set up to possibly have future expansion to allow one more location to be added to it.

Like I say I am having to try and keep the costs down as much as possible as the amount of calls will be relatively low anyway. From reading through other messages it looks like a possible route is to use IP phones and the Cisco ATA-186 but I am relatively new to voip and would appreciate any advice.

    Thanks in advance
    Steve

PS just in case it makes any difference, both locations are in the UK (less than 10 miles apart) and are using Windows XP.

About your configuration to provide call forwarding from one location to another using VOIP:

    1) Caller dials location number one, goes via normal phone line to the location, where is conected to the FXO port of a gateway. The gateway will convert the call to data, or VOIP and send the call back to the same phone line as ADSL data now, going to the second gateway on location two.

Similar setup on location two, the call comes in via ADSL, goes into the gateway and comes out via the FXS port of the gateway, to a phone or fax machine.

In order to do that, you will need a gateway that have FXO and FXS ports on the same box. Also, they should be able to work on a peer to peer configuration, without gatekeeper.
I read about many happy user of Qtelnet boxes doing that.

In the case of calls from office or location “a” to location “b”, the person will pick up the phone attached to the FXS port and call the other end.

In order to get the option to dial a digit and get re-routed, the only way that I could think of doing that is using a PBX or small voice mail system to answer the call (called pre-attendant on the US), and let the voice mail or auto attendant let ring a single line set or route you to the gateway to send the call to the other office.

Maybe someone could refine the original idea and come out with a better or cheaper solution.

And my normal disclaimer: Stay away from Quintum A200, unles you enjoy troubles.

    Good luck!!!!!!!

Many thanks for the info Noname, it is appreciated.

Does anyone know of a windows based auto attendant that works with an FXS/FXO gateway ? Most of the software I’ve looked up relies on communication with analogue lines only with no apparent intergration with VoIP.

    Cheers in advance.
