There is a detailed list of internet telephone services at http://www.iphone.shows.it ,
Among these VOIP softwares, some support video and voice conference.
But the IP telephony is stil not as popular as traditional phone calls. It is cheap but
it has sound delay or echo at internet jam.
What’s the future for internet calls from your point of view?

    HI,

    the future is very bright.

I have an exciting project, which, if succesfull, will allow all the people who own a DSL line to be able to call the world with a portable IP phone.( for free)

I will try to explain it as much as possible ( you can also see my web pages at http://www.worldonip.com/community.

    It is very simple.
Instead of sharing the bandwidth to download illegal MP3 or movies, we share it to telephone for free.

You need to connect to your DSL line an access point, to place the antenna on a window. You do not even need to have the computer on 24 hours a day, just connecting the access point.
You will create a ” Hot Spot” that every other member of the community will be able to use.
You will then need a portable IP phone, you will connect to the Net either through your own Hot Spot or through the hot spot of any other member, wherever you will be ( all the continents will have people sharing hot spots.

A call with our device consumes maximum 20 k, thanks to to high compression of the voice and the quality is absolutely gorgeous.
Our telephone will have a price around 200, 250 US dollars. An access point costs not more than 100 US dollars.

The value of the investment highly overcomes the amount.

Imagine, being able to call for free for the rest of your life!!! And imagine what kind of doors opens a connection like that!

    What do you think?

Who wil pay for the DSL service? who will pay for any upoad and download costs? How will you connect to the traditional public networks?

If the fones are truly roaming/portable how will you manage the relocation of so many MAC’s across the WWW?

Although voice communications continues to dominate the landscape today, this will ultimately change as data communications grows at 100% per year, while voice only increases by 8 to 10% per year. Thus, the dabbling of major carriers in the packet switched voice (or more specifically voice over IP world) only makes sense to the extent that these carrier wish to offer a data network service that their data customers want to use for voice communications as well. For example, a multi-location user that uses a commercial data network service to connect those customer locations might want to gain some economies of scope by using that same network for voice communications, as well. It has been estimated that companies can lower their communications costs by as much as 80% by placing their voice traffic through the unused space in their data networks for a “free ride.”
The same applies to people who ALREADY have a DSL line for a flat rate, they can use the unused bandwidth for telephone calls.

Of course if the quality of voice is as good as in the usual way.

And it is out of any doubt that it would be stupid, at least at the moment, to make a contract for a DSL line in order to use it for VOIP.

It’s like if somebody would have a DSL line in order to use it for the downloading of illegal files when he is not even interested in music or movies.
In my opinion it would be cheaper ( and much less risky at the moment) to buy a CD once in a while or rent a movie.

The CD quality is 10 times better than a MP3 and the real DVD is not comparable to certain compressed copies.

In Italy last year the number of DSL connection upgraded 250% and they think the next year will even be better.

What about a ADSL line that cost $25 dollars a month, but you could save $250.00 a month on overseas calls.

You are kind of narow minded on some of your ideas.
Some scenarios that take the air out of your idea.

Not everyone get unlimited local calls.
Most Californians pay for each call, even locals ones.
Who will pay for few thousand call just to be a nice neighbor???

Someone calls and oreder 1 kilo of a white powder usinf your phone line. Police show up on your door saying that the call got traced to your phone line.

Someone make a terrorist threat, make purchases using stolen credit card, call 1900 porno lines, call the operator and ask for a person to person call to Timboucktu, etc.
    How do you prevent it.

Hot spots that work for 500 meters.: I guess they will be unlicenced to be easily to instal.
I still have not seen a device that send signals without external antenas that have that range on unlicenced frequencies.
Try to install external antenas in most homes, on any civilized country.

Nice idea, lime comunism and other utopias.

    Hi,
in one way as we say “you bring water to my mill.”
Yes in certain countries it makes a huge sense not only a DSL, but even a modem connection, for example Asia and Africa.
The telephone calls there are so expensive , it is convenient also using a modem.
We have an IP phone that you can connect to the telephone line ( all our telephones do not need a computer) and works exactly like a normal telephone.
It connects to the Internet through your local provider when somebody calls you or you call somebody.
Of course the call is not 100% free, you have to pay the line till your Provider, but being a local call it makes sense for example if you have relatives in London and you live in Nigeria.
They can have the same phone and you can call them with a local call rate.

Regarding the Hot Spots, the distance you reach depends on the position of your antenna, and I can assure you the latest generation can reach long distances.

There are already a lot of hot spots in the big cities, some of them are public.

Some MacDonalds offer the connection for free if you consume a meal. Also some Hotels and restaurants.
It will soon be, in my opinion, like offering the air conditioning or some other added value service.
Intelligent people in the touristic locations already understood or will understand ,it is something more they can offer in order to win the competition.

If you were on vacation in London you would have a lot of public “Hot Spot” in which you could use your portable.

I can assure you there are a lot of people more optimistic than you.

We can also offer a 1.000.000 bit encryption as additional feature, but I guess it will be mostly for banks or people who really need unhackable calls ( it won’t be cheap).
I personally would’t care if someone listened to my calls.. I have nothing to hide, and, as depressing as it can look, my conversation is usually kind of plain ” How are you, where do you go, where do we meet…”
I do not think I would have many interested in listening what I say.

And if they are, well , let them enjoy….if that is enough…

Communism is not a nice idea, it is a different way of living.
It failed as in one way capitalism failed, because ” It is a humiliating confession, but we are all of us made out of the same stuff. Where we differ from each other is purely in accidentals: in dress, manner, tone of voice, religious opinions, personal appearance, tricks of habit and the like. The more one analyses people, the more all reasons for analysis disappear. Sooner or later one comes to that dreadful universal thing called human nature. ”
Man is not good and never will be. We are mostly egoist and self centered. We mostly and before everything think of ourselves.

Our society whatever political system you choose, sooner or later is the mirror of man.

I do not believe in Utopias, I believe in a world where people can call for free ( or almost).
