As VoIP comes further into common use, there is much talk among my fellow engineers concerning different ways to converge your data and voice infrastructure. Some advocate using a dedicated VLAN for voice traffic, others only put compressed voice on the wire, still others insist that their phones won’t jam up the LAN and that they aren’t concerned at this time.

I’d like to start a thread for engineers, students and executives to discuss these various strategies.

I advocate using a dedicated VLAN for voice traffic. The “others that insist that their phones won’t jam up the LAN” are correct because the problem is that the LAN (data) will jam up the VoIP. Voice can not tolarate large delays or many lost packets.
