What should be the ideal percentage of traffic b/w 900 & 1800…Pls tell me how do i push more calls to 1800 cells

    Guru,

Try to load the 1800 cells as much as possible (90% load). Then the rest can go to the 900 cells.

    To do that :
1/ ensure your 1800 cells provide enough coverage (slightly more uptilt than 900 should do the trick)
2/ tune the parameters in order to force traffic in the 1800 cells. That is highly vendor-dependent. What is your vendor?

and why we aim to load the 1800 cells?

    Hi,

That is a good question. I assume the DCS1800 cells are better because :
1/ the 1800 frequency band is much cleaner (more channels available –> frequency planning result in better C/I)

2/ the 900 cells are congested.

3/ the 1800 provide less coverage (-10dB compared to a 900) ==> use the 1800 to carry as much traffic as possible, and leave 900 capacity for faraway or indoor traffic, or for EGPRS. Indeed EGPRS enjoy high RXLEV a lot. (MCS9 needs > -85dBm or so)

Now in some networks, that might not be valid… but I think it works in 99% of the case 🙂

thanks u for the explanation, therefore it’s not recommended to extend MAX MCS by cell on 1800 from MCS6 to MCS9?

If you plan to push EGPRS on the DCS1800, then you should use the highest MCS available. The MCS is adapted dynamically. If the radio is good, the best MCS is used.

For me, the best strategy is to push the EGPRS on the GSM900, and the voice on the DCS1800. Thanks to speciic parameters (NC2 reselection and redirection) you can achieve this kind of strategy.

Thanks PIX..We have motorola..can you tell me the parameters can be retuned to allow more traffic to 1800 band

Motorola ? They still do GSM ??
I don’t know what are the motorola parameters, I am a pure 100% Alcatel enthusiast…

Fortunately we are the only one i suppose to use motorola….Can you guide me with other vendor parameters at least

Ans 1:-band traffic percentage depends upon the 900 & 1800 trx configuration in your cell.

Ideally it should be near about same so that both the bands gets utilized to same %.

Ans 2:-More traffic psh to 1800…
Try changing “dual_band_offset” value more towards positive value.

    If suppose your current
dual band offset is -ve value ex: value= -10 then change it to -2 or even 0.

By doing so, we are making 1800 cell more aggressive.

    Also let me know what
“band preference mode” is set in that dual band cell.
