Carrier and Channel

    Can anyone tell me the difference between channel, carrier and frame , I am getting confused here , Some books are saying channel and carrier are same what to do ?

    A carrier is 8 channels or 8 TS.
    GSM channel = 8TS =4.615 ms frame duration = 200 KHz = 25 KHz per TS

    1TS= 577 µ-s = 156.25 bits

    A physical channel may be split into several (logical) channels:
    Logical channel C1: every 4th slot;
    Logical channel C2: every other slot

    Carrier is the physical layer, the frequency of your TRX.
    It is divided into 8 timeslots.

    Channel is the logical use of each timeslot, whether TCH, BCCH, SDCCH, etc.

    Channel is also used to describe the whole carrier, in terms of frequency : Channel 54 means frequency with ARFCN = 54. In this case, it can be confusing.

    A frame is a snapshot of a cyclic entity. For instance, the 8TS of a channel are repeating every 8TS. TS0…7, TS0…7, etc.
    A block of consecutive ts 0 … 7 is a frame. a tdma frame.

    Hi all,will anyone help me by explaining how many subscribers can be accommodated at any instant of time through a bts ?

    Yes We Can !

    One BTS can be configured with different capacities.
    It depends how many TRX modules are installed in the BTS cabinet.

    1 TRX = (in average) 7 voice calls at the same time.

    One BTS can accommodate, depending on which vendor you’re using, at maximum between 12 and 24 TRX.

    So, one BTS can carry between 8×12 to 8×24 calls at the same time.
    Multiply those values by 2 if you are using Half Rate codec. (1 TRX can carry 14 half-rate voice calls)
