Could two cells in GSM network operate with same Cell ID number but different LAC without issues?

it depends what is your cell element identifier in your O&M databases. If each cell is defined per LAC/CI, then that’s possible.

For instance, in Alcatel-Lucent, there is 2 modes of identification (in RNO, NPA and NPO, for instance): either per CI or per LAC/CI.
First solutions (only CI), if there are 2 identical CI’s in the network, the NPO will detect a duplicate CI. But the cells are still operational from a telecom point of view.

For a cell identification, the complete CGI has to be considered in which even though the CellID is similar, the LAC will differ and ultimately the cell identity will also differ.

    Hi,
if two cells, one in GSM and one in UMTS, have the same Cell Id but different LAC, in the same area, could that be a problem?
    Best Regards,
    Dell
