What is the benefit of the use of DR (Discontinuous Reception)?

“Discontinous Reception (DRX) is a method used in mobile communication to conserve the battery of the mobile device.
The mobile device and the network negotiate phases in which data transfer happens. During other times the device turns its receiver off and enters a low power state.”

in GSM, as far as i remember, the DRX is used in idle mode, but i don’t know if it is used during an active call.
