Why uplink frequency in GSM is lower than downlink frequency?

Because it has been defined this way…
A logical explanation : it is because the UL is the limiting path in GSM, so by using lower frequencies, it is actually possible to increase the UL level a little bit more.

Also since there are more losses in the Uplink.

Higher the freq higher will be the losses!!!!

High frequency takes more power to transmit the signal low frequency comes under the level of down link mobile having a small power back up source but our base station haveing enough power source like d.g , Battry , A.C Power supply.
so we are choose up link is low frequencies, Eg in satelite up linke used high frequencies.

    Ramajayan,

no no, the logic is good, but it’s the other way around. The MS still transmits with the same max power, whatever the frequency.

It’s just that for the same TX power, the UL RXLEV will be stronger if the frequency is lower.

Therefore, if power control is activated, the MS might require less TX power in order to provide the same UL RXLEV.

Anyway, it seems we all agree on the reasons why they chose UL with lower frequencies 🙂
