Hopping Issue (HSN and MAIO patterns)

    Our network is entirely Ericsson and use hopping in Urban areas. We use 19,1800MHz ARFCNs (530 to 548) and all HSNs (1 to 63). We have only 3 sector sites.
    We use only 3 MAIO numbers for a cell.

    But we experience heavy interference only in hopping channel group.

    Is this senario is OK? How can I improve hopping quality by changing MAIO values?

    are you using Hopping 1by1 or 1by3?

    Dear Tomar,

    What did you mean by 1by1 and 1by3? Sorry I havent heared these terms before.

    Anyway we use 3 MAIO numbers for a cell. That means 9 MAIO numbers for a 3 sector site.

    Sector A – MAIO 0 6 12
    Sector B – MAIO 2 8 14
    Sector C – MAIO 4 10 16

    We use this pattern in entire hopping sites. Is there any difference between ODD MAIOs and EVEN MAIOs?

    If you are using this pattern:
    Sector A – MAIO 0 6 12
    Sector B – MAIO 2 8 14
    Sector C – MAIO 4 10 16

    Of course you need one frequency list. and the max configuration is 4/4/4. each sector has 4 TRU. You can also use this pattern:
    Sector A – MAIO 0 2 4
    Sector B – MAIO 6 8 10
    Sector C – MAIO 12 14 16.

    Thanks Simanullang and Tomar, yes we use only one frequency list and maximum capacity is 4+4+4.

    To get a better understanding, if we use 2 frequency lists then what should be the changes in MAIOs?

    I think it’ll be better to use 3 different Freq List. So MAIO values will be same at each sector (ex: 0,2,4,6).. this configuration is called by 1×3.

    In our case following configuration is suitable, isnt it?

    1 – 530 to 535 MAIO 0 2 4
    2 – 536 to 541 MAIO 0 2 4
    3 – 542 to 547 MAIO 0 2 4

    Then we can use 1 for Sector A, 2 for Sector B and 3 for Sector C.

    This is just to clarify your answer.

    DEAR SHANKAR,

    HSN:(Hopping Sequence number)
    there are 1 to 63 pseudorandom sequences used for interference reduction.

    MAIO:(Mobile Allocation Index Ofset)
    it basically decides the start of hopping in MA LIST
    Explanation with the help of Example:
    let say we are using frequency planning 1*3 which means one MA list for 3 sectors.

    MA list= (10,12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26)mhz for e.g

    Now each sector will have different MAIO 1-e

    HoppingTrx trx1 trx2 trx3
    sector1 0 2 4
    sector2 6 8 10
    sector3 12 14 16

    NOTE:
    For every sector there are 4 trxs normally one for BCCH & rest of them are for hopping.

    hsn=63 for e.g

    This means for sector 1 frequency hopping will start from 10mhz and for sector 2 it will start from 17mhz and for sector 3 it will start from 23mhz.The benefit of selecting these maio is, hopping sequence will start from different frequencies coz of which there ll be a very less chance of facing interference and interference reduction is a important issue to be reduced.

    MAIO is just a start number take it like this, it is simply an offset of trx to start hopping

    Hi Mahesh,

    Please check whether you are having 19 HOPPING frequency? Is the 19 ARFCN completely Hopping frequency or is it inclusive of Non Hopping Frequency also (BCCH)? If not, then your MAIO is the best possible way. The interference will not be due to MAIO.

    Also, please check the max. configuration in your system. the max. config possible without interference is 4+4+4
