Can anyone explain how a single Time slot is shared between different subscribers in GPRS technology? How another mobile set can tune to the time slot already alloted to one subscriber in GPRS?
How a data rate of 9.6kbps is achieved per Time slot in case of GSM and how the date rates have been increased to 115kbps in case of GPRS?

    Hello Vijay,

in GPRS we have TBF, USF and TFI

    – TBF can be from net. to MS or vice versa ( temporary block flow )

    – USF (uplink status flag)

    – TFI (temporary flow indetifier)

USF is used (on a PDCH basis)
to allow multiplexing of uplink Radio blocks, from a number of MSs, in the same PDCH.

In DL, from the TFI the MS detects its own data transmitted, while from the USF the MS knwos when it can transmit on the next uplink block

so by this, MSs can be multiplexed and the network knows which block belongs to which MS.

    Good Luck

yes, time multiplexing is the key… a same time-slot position will be used by different TBF at different time (or rather, at different frame).

it’s much easier to explain it with a drawing !

    datarate in GSM and GPRS…
main difference is that in GSM, you are limited to the use of one timeslot. Whereas in GPRS, you can use up to 4 timeslots in downlink.

Then, you can use different coding schemes in GPRS, to make the usage of a timeslot more efficient (less protection code, more useful data).

In GPRS, you can reach about 40 to 80 kbps.
In EDGE, up to 220 kbps.

EDGE is using a different air modulation, sending more information within one signal. (you’ll need to goole it, because the explanations are long and complex)

You are always mention time slot, what is time slot? I’m actually studying wireless networks but I can’t understand it because maybe I don’t know what specifically is that time slot.
    Thank you for your answers.
