Hi,
Apparently, the major reason is to prevent lightning from striking and damaging the BTS.
In a thundercloud, the lower portion is negatively charged(so goes the theory). As a result of this, if your BTS is powered with a positive voltage, it would encourage lightning discharges through the BTS(‘cos unlike charges attract).
