This page offers you an introduction to Westplan through a number of screen images.  For more information, you can view the user guide.

Westplan in Outlook Mode

Westplan's work is automatically starred in a local database which can be displayed in either Outlook Mode (similar to Microsoft Outlook) or Explorer Mode (similar to Windows Explorer).  The following image shows Westplan in its Outlook Mode:

The following image shows Westplan in its Explorer Mode.  This is useful if a large number of projects or networks have been defined:

Adding links

In the above images, a project with six nodes is shown.  Each network defines a way in which its project's nodes are inter-connected.  Inter-nodal links are added using simple point and click, and their transmission facilities are specified using the following dialogue box:

Adding a link

The contents of the bottom section vary depending upon the link type selected in the top section.  The example above shows a Voice over IP link.

Voice over IP parameters

If voice over IP is to be analysed, then the VoIP parameters above layer two are defined on a project-wide basis:

Entering traffic figures

Although Westplan assigns default traffic levels to a project when its nodes are added, it is best to change these yourself to reflect the call volumes between your nodes.  These figures can either be entered in Erlangs of busy hour traffic or minutes of traffic per day:

Inter-nodal routing

As a default, Westplan assumes that calls will be routed through a network using the shortest path.  If this routing is not appropriate, then you can define your own routing rules using simple point and click.  Once defined, they will appear in the routing drawings as animated highlights of the specified links:

Optimising a network

Once traffic levels have been entered, networks can be optimised.   During the optimisation process, Westplan calculates the traffic levels offered to each link, and recommends the facilities that should be deployed on each link for the quality of service to remain within the constraints that you can specify.  The links in the network drawings change colour to indicate whether the suggestion is to increase or decrease the deployed facilities.

More detailed information on each link can be found under the Links tab above the workspace:

Calculation notes

Each calculation is justified in a printable report.  This is particularly useful when interpreting the complicated calculations involved in Voice over IP bandwidth dimensioning:
