Description of VoIP Select

VoIP SelectVoIP Select is a flexible telecommunications calculator package which allows you to perform technical calculations, including those involving Voice over IP.  The software lets you to build calculators to meet your own needs, and includes pre-defined calculators for common applications.

VoIP Select allows you to explore the answers to questions like:

  • I have 1500 Erlangs of busy hour traffic.   How many lines does this need at 1% and 2% blocking, and what bandwidth is required through an IP-based network, if I use G.729A, compared with G.723.1? or

  • I have 100000 minutes of traffic a day.   How many lines should I provide for blocking targets of 1%, 3% and 5%?

VoIP Select operates on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows NT4, Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

Voice over IP Support

VoIP Select is based on our free online calculators, but provides extended support for Voice over IP calculations.   Specifically, it allows you to take the following factors into account for your bandwidth calculations:
Voice compression (CODEC)
Select from: G.711 (PCM), G.723.1 (ACELP / MP-MLQ), G.726 (ADPCM), G.728 (LD-CELP) and G.729 (CS-CELP).
Silence suppression
For compression schemes (CODECs) that support silence suppression, you can specify the percentage of activity on a voice call and see the corresponding bandwidth savings
Packet interval
Specify the interval between IP datagrams (10ms - 90 ms).
Transport protocol
Select the type of compression used for IP/UDP/RTP headers (e.g. cRTP to 4 bytes).
Control protocol
Explore the effect of using header compression on the RTCP control packets.
Data link protocol
See the effect on bandwidth of transmitting VoIP using Ethernet, PPP, Frame Relay, ATM and HDLC.

The latest version of VoIP Select performs data transfer calculations, allowing you to estimate how much data will be transfered per day into a VoIP gateway if the number of minutes switched by the gateway is known.

You can read the fully illustrated User Guide now to find out more about these parameters.

Using VoIP Select

This image shows a simple example of using VoIP Select to convert between busy hour traffic to VoIP bandwidth:

VoIP Select installs nine calculators which can be used immediately (listed on the left of the window under My Calculators).  The calculator shown above is the Erlangs to IP bandwidth calculator.  VoIP Select breaks calculations into discreet blocks, and each of these is represented by a panel into which you can enter the calculation parameters.  An Engset Calculator was recently added to the stock calculators included with VoIP Select.

For more information, you can read the fully illustration User Guide online.

Designing your own calculators

If the nine calculators installed with VoIP Select do not quite meet your requirements, then it is very easy to design your own by dropping Calculator blocks onto a design workspace and connecting them to describe the flow of calculations.

A collection of calculator building blocks have been provided including Voice over IP, Erlang B, Extended Erlang B, Engset and general converters.   To design a new calculator, you just drop a block onto the workspace and, optionally, connect it to another block.  All this is achieved using mouse point-and-clicks.  Each calculator is automatically stored in a local database called My Calculators so that it can be used later.

To find out more about designing calculators, and the calculator blocks provided, you can read the fully illustrated User Guide online.

Documentation

VoIP Select is provided with a fully formatted and illustrated User Guide which is distributed electronically in the form of Web pages. This User Guide explains how to use the pre-defined calculators and how to design your own calculators. There is also a Windows help system installed with the software, providing immediate context-sensitive help when designing calculators.

Additionally, all calculations record notes.  These show the input, parameters and output of each calculation.  They also show any assumptions made in the calculations, and detail the steps involved in each Voice over IP calculation.   The notes for the previous seven days can be viewed, copied to the clipboard or saved to RTF format for importing into a word processor.
